It was a pretty good morning's work: dominating Edison (Huntington Beach) in the early game of the Sandy Berger Invitational at Canyon Hills High, with two more goals by sophomore Allison Hawthorne--the Vikings' lead scorer so far--in the first half, then adding another as everyone played and five JV "A" players who came up for the tournament got in, as well.
Then, with Hawthorne--who else?-- scoring early, Coach Amanda Combs Warford's squad played the rest of two 25-minute halves with a 1-0 lead, before giving up a lone Scripps Ranch goal as time ran out in the 11 a.m. contest to tie, 1-1.
In the old days, pre-Combs Warford, a dominant Falcons team would have won hands-down during the years that Scripps and Canyon Hills (formerly Serra) ruled in field hockey under their long-time coaches.
Of course, La Jolla would have loved to take home a shutout victory over Scripps in the tourney, but it wasn't to be this day. Stay tuned for league playing coming up. The Ranchers are an opponent in that schedule.
So, with a later game yet to come, the Vikings were looking good on pool-play day, with the second day of the Berger Invite (named after the legendary coach of the Canyon Hills program) planned for next Sat., Sept. 23.
