This interview took place Sat., Sept. 23, after the Vikings' 15-0 win over Coronado the second day of the America's Finest City Tournament at Coronado High, after the 10 a.m. game.
La Jolla, playing only its eighth game of the season (due to Coggan Pool repair/remodeling), thoroughly smothered the Islanders from start to finish.
Meanwhile, Coach Tom Atwell's players got into the warmup pool to cool down for their next game in the tourney, at 1 p.m.
Q: On Thursday (Sept. 21) you said you guys were still working on some things, that you hadn't played enough games. How is that going?
We're getting better. Especially our press defense is getting better. But we still have some things on the offensive end to work on, and our body position on defense, we're still not 100 percent. About 75 percent. We're getting there. But we've improved the last couple of games.
Q: It's still pretty early in the season. You've only played a few games.
We've played eight games now, so it's a little less than a third of the games. But I think by the time we get through this weekend, we should kind of be where we need to be. I feel pretty good about where we're at.
