LJ FB: Downpour

By Ed Piper

At 3:44 p.m. Wed., May 22, a downpour drenched La Jolla High football players just as they began warm-ups in the second week of Spring practice.

After a let-up, with players in T-shirts, sweatshirts, shorts, cleats, howling loudly as they got soaked, the rain started again.

Assistant coach Stephen Dixon, whose area will be the linebackers as well as JV Defensive Coordinator, showed his bi-layer of upper clothing as the rain started. He put his hoodie up during the downpour, having to carry that soggy cap around until it dried a little as Wednesday practice continued.

Dixon will be doing a unique juggling game: He'll continue in his role as an assistant in basketball at Country Day, while taking on his duties in Vikingland football.

He and Viking head coach Tyler Roach know each other from serving on the Country Day football staff. Roach served as Defensive Coordinator at LJCDS three years ago, in his hiatus from La Jolla High (he was Offensive Coordinator for the Vikings under Jason Carter).

"My fiancee--she'll be my wife in one month--already knows what she's getting," the engaging Dixon said Tues., May 28, at practice. "No surprises. That always works best."

He was explaining how he would handle coaching two sports at two different schools in two consecutive sports seasons which overlap each other. There is going to be quite a time crunch there. "No rest for the wicked," as my mother used to laugh.

Dixon starred as a prep at Scripps Ranch High. He played defensive back for the Falcons, as well as receiver on offense. He also ran back kicks and punts.

In college, he went to Division 3 Greenville (Illinois) in the Midwest to play for the Panthers.

LJ Cheer: Lopez regime begins

By Ed Piper

"Peter, I'm sorry but I'm going to have to ask you to leave now," said Elsie Lopez, the new cheer advisor for La Jolla High. "We're starting tryouts."

I knew why she called me "Peter", even though that's not my name. I've had this before. It put a smile on my face and humor in my words. When people hear the last name Piper, they are prone to associate it with the first name "Peter", because of the tongue twister, "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers."

Even though they don't remember my last name after introductions--during which there are always distractions--they may think of "Peter".

The Big Gym looked very organized: Laptops were set on a table against the western wall of the gym for check-in. Blue mats were already laid out in the center of the floor, toward the back doors of the gym (the side used for the scoring table in volleyball). Lopez, 24, is assisted by her mother, Delia Lopez, the registrar at the school.

Many of last year's girls were visible and present for the first day of tryouts under the new coach. I wasn't aware of any advance notice of the coaching change, after about six years of Lopez's predecessor.

"I've never run my own program," replied Lopez in a quick conversation before the departure, "but I did cheer for eight years in school (and non-school teams)."

Asked if competitive cheer will be continued, Lopez said, "Yes, but later..."

Open tryouts continue Wednesday and Thursday, May 29, and 30.

Cheer camp will take place this summer, but Elsie said dates were not selected yet.
