Snapshot: Anthony Stanley, linebacker

Anthony Stanley (43), junior linebacker, La Jolla Vikings. (Photo by Ed Piper)

I first became aware of Anthony Stanley, a linebacker for La Jolla, at his older brother James' graduation party, a Polynesian celebration of dance and food. Since then, Anthony has grown into one of the leaders of the Vikings' defensive unit this season.

Why do you enjoy Polynesian dancing? Being that it's my mom's group (and school), I've grown up with it my whole life. I teach there five days a week, on top of football.
Favorite food: Hawaiian food - teriyaki chicken
Music: Hawaiian. There isn't any kind of music I don't like.
Song: The La Jolla High Alma Mater
Inspirational song/saying: "Reach for the moon, and even if you miss, you land among the stars." If you give it your all, you're still going to be striving. Keep going.
Figure you admire: I go for the Polynesian side. Junior Seau. I play the same position. Growing up, I always tried to mimic him. I used to be his number 55. I actually knew him on a first-name basis. Our family was really close to him.
Goals: I want to play football on the next level. I want to get my education. I want to major in biology--biochemist. I want to become a doctor. I wouldn't mind being a (family) practitioner or coming up with cures.

Katja (pronounced CAUGHT-juh) Sarain (pronounced sah-RYE-in, approximately) chatted after La Jolla's game against Scripps Ranch Monday (Oct. 21). She also plays softball, as well as other sports. Katja was willing to take the goalie spot this year, after last year's goalie(s) graduated, leaving the position vacant.

Food: Sushi - tuna roll
Music performer: ZZ Ward, a new artist - bluesy
Song: "Till the Casket Drops" by ZZ Ward
Person you admire: My grandfather, Frank Davis. I admired how adventurous he was and how much he traveled.
Plans for the future: A four-year university. I want to try to go to Cal Berkeley.
Dream career: Culinary
Comment on trying the goal-keeper position this year: It's been difficult, but I've been able to work through it and become a better goalie for the team.

LJ FH falls to Scripps, 3-0

La Jolla's field hockey team kept it competitive, but ultimately fell to top-ranked powerhouse Scripps Ranch 3-0 Monday (Oct. 21) at Edwards Stadium. The Vikings remain 2-1 in the Western League, an excellent 12-6-1 overall.

"We didn't play well the first half," said La Jolla coach Paula Conway. "We kind of were in shock. Then we played really tough the last 15 minutes. "So we need to piece together a good 15 minutes four times all the way throughout a 60-minute period."

She said senior midfielder Sophie Mazur, among others, has made a vital contribution this season.

The Vikings next travel to Cathedral Catholic Monday (Oct. 28) for a 6:30 p.m. contest.

Jordyn Reardon is one of three captains of the 2013-14 La Jolla High cheer squad. She celebrated her 17th birthday at the Viking football game at University City Friday (Oct. 11). Jordyn also serves as ASB Commissioner of Spirit.

Music group: Evanescence, a rock band

Song: "Hand That Feeds You", by Nine Inch Nails

Historical figure: Andrew Jackson, seventh president of the United States. I like him because during his presidency, people had ill attitudes toward him, but he didn't let that bring him down. He was still able to be a good president. (My family is from North Carolina, part of the South.)

Future plans and goals: I really love English. I want to get my undergraduate degree in English and my Master's in Journalism, because I want to be a broadcaster in entertainment.

Comment on the Viking cheer squad: I think all of us, being really good friends, have a strong camaraderie. We all like each other. When you have that, you are better able to work as a team and encourage each other to do really well during games.

Inspirational saying: "If you get knocked down, just get back up." You can't let one bad experience bring you down. You have to learn from experiences.

LJ VB edges UC, 3-2

La Jolla was on fumes by the time the girls volleyball team staggered to a victory in the shortened fifth game, to win 3-2 at University City Wednesday (Oct. 16).

The Vikings won the first two games of the match, but then gave up two straight wins to the crosstown rival Centurions and at 2-2 was facing defeat. Energy seemed very low, in stark contrast to matches in which the girls really pump it up.

"I saw our team play well when we passed the ball, and struggle when we didn't," said La Jolla coach David Jones after the win. "It really comes down to that. Offensively, we've got lots of weapons. We've got some heighth defensively. But it really all comes down to serve receipt, the most basic fundamental of the game."

La Jolla evens its league record at 2-2, 12-9 overall, and next faces Scripps Ranch at home Friday (Oct. 18).

La Jolla onslaught too much for UC, 63-6

Receiver Nic Skala (11) rises above to clutch a Collin Rugg pass good for six points and an overwhelming 48-6 La Jolla lead over UC in the fourth quarter. The touchdown was one of three for the senior Skala on the night. (Photo by Ed Piper)

"Plethora" was the word for La Jolla in its football attack against the University City Centurions Friday night (Oct. 11). A plethora of everything: offensive fireworks, a fumble run back for a touchdown on defense, a kick blocked on special teams, celebrations and smiles all around. Following what had to be a near-record 39-6 advantage at halftime, the Vikings rolled on to a 63-6 final differential to square their record for the first time this season at 3-3. UC dropped to a lowly 1-5.

La Jolla safety Demarco Bland, during a sideline pause by the defensive unit as the rout mounted in the second half, cheerfully asked an observer, "Are you enjoying yourself?" Obviously, Bland, under normal circumstances a friendly, engaging individual, was encouraged to be even more upbeat by the impressive performance he and his teammates were putting on on the adjoining gridiron.

La Jolla's no-huddle, hurry-up offense rattled off its initial touchdown in machine-gun-like fashion after the opening kickoff, with junior quarterback Collin Rugg distributing passes among three different receivers--Nic Skala, Da'Jour Tims, Carlton O'Neal, then Skala again for the 31-yard touchdown bomb--this all in the first minute and 32 seconds of the ballgame.

The score was followed by an encore touchdown 2:53 later, Eric Tims and O'Neal running the ball, spliced around Rugg completions to Skala of 33 yards and to Brandon Bonham of 39 yards, the Vikes ascending to 12-0. O'Neal took the handoff over the threshold on a run from seven yards out. La Jolla was aided by a 10-yard penalty assessed against UC during the drive, one of many miscues committed by the hapless home team under the pressure of the hurry-up offense.

The Centurions answered with their only score of the evening on a six-yard run. But the Vikings' special teams unit snuffed out the ensuing point-after kick attempt at 4:26 of the first quarter, and the offense would proceed to pile up 683 yards in total offense and close out the pre-league portion of the season in resounding fashion.

Rugg amassed 338 yards passing on 19 of 27 attempts, tossing five touchdowns with no interceptions. This has become commonplace for Collin on a weekly basis. Martin, the all-purpose back, was simply sensational. He stepped up his considerable productivity, taking 23 carries for a whopping 216 yards. He added three receptions for 27 yards for a total of 243 all-purpose yards. Skala, with three touchdown catches, copped 7 passes for 133 yards. Bonham, another favorite target of Rugg, caught three passes for 127 yards. On Bonham's 71-yard touchdown in the first quarter for a 26-6 La Jolla lead, Rugg's pass traveled 31 yards in the air and then Bonham rambled the remaining 40 yards to take it to the house.

Linebacker Anthony Stanley, like Rugg, Martin, and Bonham a junior, piled up tackles in the defensive attack, and noseguard Justin Cook scored his first-ever touchdown, picking up a UC fumble and running it back for the final score with 8:10 left in the game. By then, game officials had mercifully instituted a running clock, in view of the wide margin between the two teams.

La Jolla coach Jason Carter said, "Our (defensive) guys really bought into studying their keys and paying attention to detail" in preparation during the week, which paid off in the dominant performance over the Centurions. O'Neal, who was active in the offense, had an interesting comment. He remembered that after Coach Carter first came to campus last spring, "I hadn't completely bought into the high-tempo, run-up-the-score offense. But when we started running it and I saw it was just attack the defense and whatever they gave us, we could beat them in any way, (I came around)." He's a believer after this game.

The Pipeline comes back after 36 years of dormancy

The Pipeline comes out of the Clairemont community in San Diego, California. You will see thrills and chills through selected photos from my website, ljhssportsbyedpiper.shutterfly.com. But an additional element will come into the picture (like the pun?) after nine years of photos only--the written word.

The Las Posas School sixth grade spelling champion will militate against spelling (and grammar) errors, and hopefully pen some good sports prose.

For those of you who don't know, my granddaughter Alexis attended and was a cheerleader at La Jolla High, Class of '08. Taking photos with a manual film camera (Minolta SR-T 201) during the football season of Fall 2004 of Alexis and her squad cheering was the beginning of the photo/LJHS connection.

My granddaughter has moved on, but the connection became the photo website in February 2009, after years of emailing photos to athletes, their families, and coaches. Most recently, the La Jolla Light asked this Fall if I wanted to write a story on the Sept. 20 Viking football game against Santa Fe Christian. And here we are.

Enjoy, and blessings of good health for the student athletes, and balance in their studies, family lives, and spirituality.
