La Jolla took care of Damien handily, 19-7, Thurs., Sept. 21, in a preview of the America's Finest City tournament in Coronado Fri.-Sat., Sept. 22-23.

Viking coach Tom Atwell, anxious to get some games under his team's belt with the delayed reopening of Coggan Pool, their home site, said afterward, "We looked good--at times. There's still things we're working on. We haven't played enough games."

The Damien encounter came off with a ball drop at 3 p.m. at Cathedral Catholic's pool. A second game against Le Jardin Academy of Kailua, Oahu, was scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.

Early on, it was a ballgame with Damien. After going up 2-1, La Jolla got a goal from senior Dustin Drobeck to lead 4-2 early in the second quarter. Captain West Gartland scored for a 7-3 advantage with 53 seconds left in the half. Damien closed the gap to three before halftime.

The Spartans never got closer than three goals the rest of the game. Atwell started the second half with Davis Parr, Jackson Lloyd, Soren Martin, Weston Bancroft, and Gartland. He told his charges that they would have three minutes, then he would sub freely. He did so.

Lloyd scored with 6:02 left in the third quarter. Starting goalkeeper Vincent Vega remained in goal beginning the second half.

With 4:09 left, Gartland made a nifty move. He did a complete 360 to go around his man, then charged to the goal as if he were in basketball dribbling the ball. He went one-on-one with the goalie, who was left alone in front of the cage, and shot the ball into the right side. 9-5, La Jolla.

West scored again at 3:34 of the third. Atwell subbed in several players, and they finished off the period up 13-5.

The Vikings, entering garbage time before a small crowd of family members in the western stands (the people at the scorer's table looking straight into the late-afternoon sun) and Le Jardin's squad, just arrived for the second game of the doubleheader, sent out Fin Alford, Bancroft, Gartland, Martin, Parr, and Lloyd to begin the fourth quarter.

They quickly moved the advantage to 14-6, 15-7 (on captain Martin's score), finishing at the 19-7 final result.
