While the Vikings were starting up against Torrey Pines at The Pit, across from Belmont Park and the Big Dipper roller-coaster ride in South Mission Beach Tues., Sept. 12.
Sonny Wiczynkski, whose given name is James, is a sophomore teamed with fellow soph Ben Salmon, who wasn't present.
Q: In your game, what are you working on right now?
Sonny: I'm going to try to work on blocking, and jumper higher (which is hard on the sand--different from indoor court). That's pretty much it. And hitting--placement.
Q: Communication with a partner in beach. It's very crucial.
Definitely that's a part of a high-level game, 'cause when you're up hitting, they can see everything you can't. You need to know that they will come down and tell you where, how hard...
Q: What is your experience with different partners, like getting along personally, communication with words?
You really need a partner you can get along with, that you two can work together well. But it needs to be someone who can accept when I do wrong--especially that.
Q: On this thing I got from Jake (Northrup, head coach), Ben is your partner. That's the case?
Yeah.
Q: What works (between you)? Why did you choose to partner with him?
