With 15 seconds gone in the second quarter, La Jolla scored its third touchdown, and with Evan Martin's kick, the Vikings seemed to be sailing away at El Capitan with a 21-0 lead.

But quarterback Jackson Diehl, who was having another game reminiscent of week 1 against Bishop's--with scintillating long runs interspersed between smart passes--threw an interception picked off by the Vaqueros' Chance LaChappa.

Someone wondered aloud: Could this mean a momentum shift, in a game played by adolescents whose fortunes can change on a dime due to renewed optimism, sudden discouragement, more energy, or an adjustment in game plan?

Nah, it couldn't be.

But from that point in the second quarter, when the opposing cornerback copped an errant pass, the sailing Vikings never scored another touchdown.

And host El Capitan, buoyed by enthusiasm over Military Appreciation Night and a loud student section, with a flyover before the game, got up off the mat.

Slowly, slowly, Coach Ron Burner's crew, aided by an injury to Diehl's left ankle that sidelined him from late in the second quarter through the rest of the game, began to gain ground.

And lo and behold, the "unthinkable": With 2:29 left in the game in El Capitan's green acres, the hosts scored a touchdown on running back Julian May's four-yard run to put them up 27-24 for the eventual victory.

Viking receiver Nick Sebro (3) runs after
a reception on 2nd-and-3 in the second quarter,
LJ scored on a field goal to lead 24-7
at the end of the drive.
