Viking quarterback Jackson Diehl had no restrictions on his scrambling Fri., Sept. 15 against Mission Bay, because he repeatedly broke from the pocket and ran--with success, despite the low-scoring 14-7 win over the Bucs in week 5.

After being injured in the first half at El Capitan Sept. 1 and having to sit out the following game Sept. 8, a loss to Rancho Bernardo, the forceful Diehl showed extra tape on the outside of both ankles, criss-crossing for added protection up both legs.

The senior QB kept the ball 13 times for 46 yards, often in bruising traffic up the middle against Mission Bay, which wasn't happy to lose its first game after four wins to now stand 4-1. La Jolla is 3-2 with a bye week following, before Eastern League play kicks off Sept. 29 against Mira Mesa for Homecoming.

In addition to his free movement on runs, Jackson connected with his brother, Carson, and other Viking receivers on passes that moved the chains.

Jackson completed 9 of 14 passes for 111 yards.

On the other side, 6'6" Buccaneer QB Charlie Hutchison, who stars for Coach Marshawn Cherry on the Mission Bay basketball team, was 7 for 19 for 83 yards passing, with 14 carries for 87 yards--including the breath-taking run from the 47 as time ran out, Charlie being tackled finally on the La Jolla 23-yard line on a drive that would have tied the game or landed the hosts ahead with a two-point conversion.
