This interview took place before La Jolla's boys water polo game against Le Jardin of Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii, at Cathedral Catholic Thurs., Sept. 21, with head coach Randy Burgess. Le Jardin is going to play in the America's Finest City tournament in Coronado Sept. 221-23, along with La Jolla and Damien and other teams.
Q: Le Jardin?
A: It started off with the French influence ("Le Jardin" means "The Garden" in French).
Q: Coach Atwell spelled it "LeJeune"--I switched the u and e--I thought it was the same name as the military camp in the Carolinas.
A: He's a history teacher. What does he know about languages? (chuckling)
Q: What are your goals (with this trip)?
A: We came out here to experience some great water polo. There are some very good teams (in Hawaii). We are not one of them. We need the experience factor. I happen to have a great deal of respect for (La Jolla) Coach (Tom) Atwell. We've worked together. We've been across the deck from each other many times.
Q: You're both quiet people. I'm kidding.
A: (Laughing) Anything that I yell or get excited about, I get from Coach Atwell.
