Kelly Drobeck, the Vikings' head coach closing in on her first decade at the seaside campus, told girls attending the first day of tryouts Mon., Aug. 12, "Our JV and freshman teams rank among the top teams in the county."

She also informed new prospects, "Our varsity may not have the best record, but that's because we schedule the best teams in the county." She said that's part of the way she continues to keep the volleyball program performing at an elite level.

Drobeck, who formerly coached at Cathedral Catholic/USDHS, gave the girls a list of what qualities the three coaches evaluating them at tryouts in the Big Gym were looking for:

--Attitude. "Look like you enjoy being out here."

--Coachability. "If you're told, extend your arms more when you pass, and you go, no, that's not going to score you a lot of points (in the evaluation)."

--Volleyball IQ, which she defined as "knowing where I'm supposed to be, knowing the rotation..."

--Adaptability. "If we ask you to play setter, and you've never played setter before," go with it and you will be more useful to the team.

--Competitiveness. "In a 10-point game, do you know the score?" and much more than that.

Kelly, in introducing herself before the other two coaches did the same for themselves, shared, "I've been to weddings, baby showers, graduations... because when you go off to college, I like to keep track of you", or words to that effect.

"We're looking for someone who wants to invest in making our team the best it can be," she added. "Our attitude is, we're all in it together."

The head coach said they will carry 12 to 14 players per team, at three levels, adding up to a total of about 36 or so.

New prospects tried out from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Returning players took the floor for a 4:30-6 p.m. workout.

One aspect of opening practice was easier: last year, the gym was being repaired, and Drobeck had to run tryouts and practice the first day at Clairemont High.
