At the end of varsity tryouts Wednesday evening, Aug. 7, La Jolla coach Tom Atwell didn't mince words.
"I think that all the new rules (about acclimation, limiting the first five days of practice to one two-hour workout per day, and heat, making accommodations if field or air conditions are too warm for student-athletes) are very soft," the long-time Viking coach and classroom teacher stated, standing poolside at the Coggan Complex on campus.
"It's an over-reaction to some really terrible things that happened in the last 10 years. In 30 years, I haven't had one kid that had to be hospitalized because of our training."
"So, it's an over-reaction."
In an email to La Jolla High team parents and players last week about the new rules, Atwell said that he is a member of the CIF Advisory Board for water polo in the San Diego Section, representing all the schools in the city of San Diego.
A follow-up question rom a reporter Wednesday had to do with tryouts and player cuts, which will be announced today, Thurs., Aug. 8.
"Yes, the tryouts basically end tomorrow morning (speaking Wednesday evening) after tomorrow morning's practice, and then I'll post the rosters--email them out."
