Padres have looming questions

Probably the best thing the 2024 Padres have going at this early point in Spring Training is that Mike Shildt is their new manager. Shildt, a veteran major league manager who sat in the chair for the St. Louis Cardinals, takes care of the "lightweight" effect two previous Padres managers (though not Bob Melvin) who came in with no major league experience were burdened with.

Fernando Tatis Jr. is already putting up nice numbers in Spring Training games from his leadoff spot in the lineup. But the rest of the squad is in flux and yet to be determined re: their direction during the regular season.

Anyone who has been reading The Pipeline knows it doesn't pretend to cover MLB--I'm all LJHS--but in an upcoming trip to Spring Training this spring, I may see the boys in brown for a glimpse of the action. Maybe an early morning workout--that's the way to go when you want to see some baseball, but not buy a ticket for a game.

In my early years going to ST every year (beginning when I moved to San Diego in 1993, visiting ST in 1994 for the first time, other than a visit way back in 1972 to a rickety A's stadium in Mesa), I never realized I could go see a workout open to the public.
