Justin Woods is a returning junior playing golf for La Jolla. He shot 43, 39, 40 (for nine holes) Feb. 20 against Bishop's at LJCC, and Feb. 21 in the John Morello Memorial Open at Twin Oaks (front and back), respectively.

These remarks were made prior to his teeing off against highly-ranked Torrey Pines High at Fairbanks Ranch Mon., Feb. 26. (Justin shot a 40 this day.)

He played with fellow junior and teammate Gabriel Vargas in the first pair against the Falcons' first pair. Torrey Pines is the defending Division 1 champion team in San Diego CIF.

That first group had to have some rarefied air, with that competition walking alongside Woods and Vargas.

What's working well for you?

My putting, short game. My game's really coming around right now.

You're a sophomore, right?

A junior.

So, 43, 39, 40 (reading scores). It's been a good start, right?

No. It's a slow start. We're (the Viking team) going to pick it up later in the season (talking in a team sense).

You guys have 3, 4 guys playing (close)--in the pack. Last year there was a big disparity between you guys.

Do you feel like you're one of the co-leaders of the team?

I feel like I'm one of the co-leaders.

Looking ahead, you guys have pre-league, then league.

So far, we've had a few practices. Of course, we have matches lined up.

Woods waits while his teammate
tees off before heading down
the fairway with the first group.
