La Jolla beach, owners of the only two Open Division titles that exist to this point in the development of San Diego high school girls' sports, dropped a 3-2 decision to host Point Loma on the Ocean Beach volleyball courts Thurs., Feb. 29--Leap Day.
The "ViQueens" (a nickname I just became aware of) didn't leap on Leap Day, so to speak. But that's tongue-in-cheek. LJHS just lost, and by a close margin. No shame in that.
The 3's and 4's won, while the 1's, 2's, and 5's lost.
The three's are Katie Murray and Kira Shepanski. The four's are Brooke Mannheime and Sofia Costello.
On the hard-luck side, the one's are Lana Ferrell and Bradleigh Ryan. The two's are Natalie Fu and Lindsay Laumann. The five's are Reagan Bennett and Daniela Vinolo.
When a reporter remarked, "On the march to another title," veteran Head Coach Kelly Drobeck grimaced and said, "That's a long way away."
