Avery Redfern is a senior at La Jolla High who does the long jump and triple jump in track and field. This conversation took place on the infield at Mt. Carmel High during the annual Field and Distance Carnival Sat., March 2, before she took any attempts in the long jump on a rainy day. Her best try in the long jump on this day was 16' 9 1/2".

You're doing the long jump and triple jump (reading off a printout from the Athletic.net website about La Jolla High entries in the meet). What's the outlook at this point in the season, super-early?

Super-early. Third week of practice. Our second meet (after the Battle of La Jolla a week-and-a-half prior). Just try not to get nervous. Tell yourself you've done it before.

And you've done it for quite a while.

This is my fourth year.

I would think so. You're starting to get gray hairs (joking).

Yeah, I know. I'm a senior citizen.
