Sophomore Chris Adamson (L)
runs the 100 meters with his
guide runner, David Cervantes,
in 16.22 seconds at the La Jolla-
Mission Bay-Hoover tri-meet
Thurs., March 14.
After the race, Adamson (left) gets support from
Mission Bay track coach Danny Perez (right). Chris
has a skin issue on his left hand from the tether
(the red strap Chris is holding) that he and Cervantes
(his shoulder in foreground right) hold to bind them
together.
Jerome Avery, an elite guide runner,
gifted Chris with the tether. The
para athlete has to wear the blackout
blind over his eyes "or he will be
disqualified", according to David
Cervantes. It is intended to create
a level playing field for all
blind runners, some of whom
can see light. Chris has not seen
light since the third grade, he said.
LJ's Luke Daly successfully clears a height. Daly,
a junior, vaulted 10'6" during the meet.
Payton Smith (5, far left, after the start) wins
the 100 meters in 11.88.
Payton (far left) runs with her sister, Olivia (far right),
in the race. Before the start, Payton said to Olivia,
"I could run with these (designer) glasses."
Olivia, a sophomore: "Don't do it." The glasses
stayed, and Payton ran successfully.
