"We play a lot of press defense," said Viking senior Katy Westphal before the game, so La Jolla went out and played pressing defense against host Coronado to forge a 7-5 lead on classmate Jordin Morrow's fourth goal with 12 seconds left in the third quarter, preserving the margin through the final period to take home their second Western League win Thurs., Jan. 11.

Morrow, Coach Amy Jennings' center on offense, scored La Jolla's first two goals as the Vikes went up quickly in the opening quarter, 2-0, before the Islanders responded with Grace Miller's successful shot.

Another senior, Margo Tempel, got the Vikings' engine going again in the second quarter late in the second quarter, scoring for a 3-1 lead.

When Coronado's Caraline Wastilla netted back-to-back goals late in the third stanza, knotting the score at 5-5, it was nervous time in the Islander pool.

The two teams took a total of four timeouts in the final period, recalibrating and resetting strategy. Finally, La Jolla's defense rode out the struggle, and Jennings' squad was able to make their league record 2-1 after facing two tough opponents, Bishop's (ending in a loss) and Coronado.
