Chris Shaffer, in his third year as an assistant to head coach Kelly Drobeck, explained on the opening day of volleyball tryouts Tues., Aug. 8, what the Vikings were looking for in prospects. The session was held Tuesday afternoon at Clairemont High, since the La Jolla gym is having work done on its floor.

Shaffer: "In tryouts, we're looking for players who are athletes who have a high volleyball IQ, even if they haven't played a lot of club or if they don't have a lot of experience, they adapt to changing situations quickly. And we're also looking for girls whose feet don't stop moving, girls whose feet are in constant motion, who are reading the play, towards the ball, reacting quickly.

"We're looking for people who aren't afraid to take big swings--to let the arm rip through, not stopping their arm. For passing, we look for a lot of quick movements on their feet, so they're keeping their upper body and their platform super calm."
