La Jolla's 2023 football edition snookered West Hills, 21-0, in a scrimmage at Granite Hills High in East County as the Saturday nightcap Aug. 12 of a six-game slate over two days, sponsored by San Diego Friday Night Lights.

Fortunately for the lowly Wolf Pack, the two teams played under a 10-minute running clock each quarter. Otherwise, the Vikings' scoring could have been much higher.

Senior quarterback Jackson Diehl, coming off a stellar junior year in which he accounted for over 2,400 yards in offense, handed off to junior running back Aidan "Carolina" McGill for a clear path down the left sideline on a 30-yard run to pay dirt on the eighth play of the game.

The dealin' Diehl then connected with fleet receiver Nick Sebro on the 13th play of La Jolla's second drive, putting the Vikings up 14-0 after Evan Martin's second straight PAT.

It was more of the same in the second half. West Hills presented no threat to score--coach Casey Ash had changed QB's during their first possession--then LJ sophomore quarterback Huddy Smith provided some fireworks with a 41-yard bomb to the right sideline into Kai Fukuda's hands for a third and final TD, 21-0.

New Defensive Coordinator Ryan Price's unit played well and made some stops, including two-way linebacker/center Logan Bonnett's clogging of a Wolf Pack run attempt on first-and-10 for no gain later in the second quarter.

Viking head coach Tyler Roach got some of his questions answered ahead of the season opener in six days against Bishop's Fri., Aug. 18. At minimum, he knows his team can dominate West Hills at this point. How much more the Vikings are capable of will show against the Knights, who opened last year's schedule with a 28-7 thrashing of La Jolla.

Receiver Kai Fukuda (10),
a junior, is feeling no pain
after taking in QB Huddy Smith's
41-yard strike on 4th-and-20
for a TD and 21-0 lead.
