Weston Bancroft, a returning senior on La Jolla High's boys water polo team, began tryouts with the rest of the team Monday morning, August 14, at the Bishop's School pool. Coach Tom Atwell named Wes Gartland and Soren Martin, both fellow seniors, with Bancroft as team members who will help provide leadership this year.

Q: Weston Bancroft, what are you going to try to have on your mind today?

WB: Probably like leadership, trying to help out the other kids that might not have the experience I have.

And then also just trying to work hard everyday, just tryouts, as well as poise and leadership and that everyone should be putting as much effort as they possibly can into the drills and the scrimmages. Almost anything so that we can have as much productivity as possible.

Q: What kind of shape are you in? (Bancroft looking fit)

WB: I'd say I'm in pretty good shape. We had rigorous training in Hawaii (on a trip just completed)--a lot of swimming, some runs, some good games. The games weren't as intense as you might see later in the season, but they were still great practice and helped us gain more unity as a team.
