Q: Are goalies different?
Kinsley Stephens, junior goalie, practicing with fellow goalie Liana Welsing: "I think so. You have to be a little crazy."
Liana: "You have to want the ball to come at you."
And so passed day one, the afternoon portion of tryouts for La Jolla High field hockey, on Mon., Aug. 7. It was a bright sky, with plenty of sun--a burned bunch of shoulders on junior Emma Weibel (VI-bel).
A reporter learned that third-year JV coach Sandy Martinez, Viking head coach Amanda Combs Warford's high school coach at El Capitan, plays in over-65 Masters field hockey. "She whups the 69-year-olds," chuckled Tucker Warford, Comb Warford's husband and technical assistant.
All three coaches this year are El Capitan alumni: new freshman coach Eryn Follet hails from there. She went on to play D3 ball at Converse University in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Returning players from Fall 2022 include: Kaelyn Nikmanesh, a senior; Olivia Snider, a senior; Weibel; Vivian Cox, a senior; Leyla Yazici, a sophomore; and Stephens.
