Zebras were galore, as an intra-squad scrimmage progressed in La Jolla football practice Wednesday evening, Aug. 9.

It turned out the referees association was using the Viking competition as a training ground for officials new to the group. Asked if they were going to officiate at the weekend's scrimmages Fri.-Sat., Aug. 11-12, one said, "Yes," though he explained his games would be at Del Norte High. Another, likewise, said "yes" but also said it would be at an alternate site.

The Vikings, in full practice gear with helmets and pads, scrimmaged under the lights. Jackson Diehl, the returning senior quarterback, headed the offense on one drive, then newcomer sophomore Hudson Smith manned the next drive.

Smith quarterbacked the JV squad last year, in fall 2022. He apparently checked school options before enrolling out-of-area at La Jolla High as a ninth-grader, including at Cathedral Catholic. He is 5'10", four inches shorter than the athletic Diehl.

The Vikings face West Hills in their scrimmage Saturday night, Aug. 12, at Granite Hills High.

Head coach Tyler Roach's three sons--Marshall, 8
(center); Reid, 4 (left back); and Griffin, 1
(right)--attended practice Aug. 9
with their mom, Leslie Roach.
