Cooper Gilmore, last year's number-one, and Maddie Quach, in the top three, attended Vikings girl golf tryouts with a whole host of fellow sophomores Monday afternoon, Aug. 14, at Riverwalk in Mission Valley.

In addition, senior twins Kiana and Malia Thacker, and two freshmen, Arie Williams and Isabella Itkin, both 14 years old, filled out the group that reported by 2 p.m. at Coach Christie Quinn's walk-through.

Did some of the sophomores talk it up among themselves and say "let's do it together"? Clara Gutierrez, who was working on her driving on the Riverwalk range before meeting time, said yes.

A former cross country runner, redheaded Hailei Miller, and a former field hockey player, Jaden Ebert, were among the crew that "talked it up" and decided to come out for the sport this fall.

Also in the mix was 10th-grader Sarina Sattari, who is new to golf.

Quinn, the veteran coach, has to be heartened with so much enthusiasm, and the fact that two of her top three golfers from the 2022 squad are returning. Christie Kim, a senior and another top three player, decided not to play this year, according to Quach.

Top-three golfer Maddie Quach, a sophomore,
shows her driving form at Riverwalk.
She and number-one Cooper Gilmore
will be counted on to help lead
the Vikings this fall.
