Matt Darton, a mountain of a man who played his high school ball at University City High with Tyler Roach, La Jolla's offensive coordinator, coaches the Viking offensive line.

Darton, before the Homecoming game, commented on his men: "The whole group has grown." Three linemen are returners (seniors left tackle Stefan Stojic, center Mateo Jimenez, and right tackle Michael Penny). "They come out. They're all in a good mood." (In other words, they enjoy playing and they have camaraderie.)

The others are left guard Alex Lopez, right guard Daniel McColl, and Grant Miller, who shares the right tackle position with Penny.

Said Darton, "Their technique is better. It gets better every game."

"I've put more time into film this year," said the O-line coach.

"Communication is good (among the linemen). They are cohesive."

Asked about sophomore Daniel McColl's performance, Darton replied, "He's really stepped up. He came in as a linebacker only. We asked him to play offensive line. He plays hard every play."
