LJ FB: Two-way = defensive stops

Defensive coordinator Mike Dutra mentioned a third factor that he felt contributed to the strengthening of the La Jolla defense in the games against Point Loma, Mission Bay, and Madison. He said slotting in players who play on both offense and defense has made a difference.

His first two reasons for the upsurge in defensive performance in that 2 1/2-game stretch (beginning with the second half of the game against the Pointers, in which the Vikings shut out their hosts), were placing players in positions that suited them best, and a different blocking scheme that involved center Mateo Jimenez.

"Two-way players" were making a difference, Dutra said prior to the Homecoming game against Kearny Nov. 7.

Part of the reason this is so is because some of these players have athletic skills--speed, strength, football IQ--that transfer to either platoon, offense or defense.
