With 2:34 left in the second quarter (high school field hockey teams play 15-minute periods), Cathedral Catholic players began celebrating a goal.
But within seconds, it became clear that there was doubt about the goal and its legality. The head referee, who was faced with decisions all afternoon, finally declared "no goal" after conferring with her line judge and talking to captains from both the Dons and La Jolla.
From an unbiased view, Coach Amanda Warford's Vikings dominated time of possession and control in the first half of the contest Mon., Oct. 2. The ball only rarely went into Cathedral's attacking half.
The visitors made adjustments, and more parity was seen.
Finally, after over three periods of hand-to-hand combat, Sienna Gustafson, the Vikings' All-CIF First Team midfielder, scored a goal with 10:04 left in the game.
The lone goal stood up, and La Jolla went home a victor.
Western League play continues Thurs., Oct. 5, with La Jolla traveling to University City for another 4 p.m. game.
