"That's an interesting strategy," said Joe Caviola, La Jolla High assistant principal, seated near the team bench.

There was 2:32 remaining in the second quarter in the water polo game Tues., Oct. 17, played at Bishop's (Coggan Pool awaiting permission to reopen). Coronado had too many players in the pool.

Not much else worked for the Islanders. They did come out with more energy in the third quarter, down 6-1 in a Western League match to a team that beat them 15-0 and 12-3 on previous occasions.

"Are they going to call a penalty for that?" Cameron Ravanbach, LJ assistant coach for goalies, queried head coach Tom Atwell. Atwell just shook his head, no.

You have to realize that Ravanbach played Division 2 at UCSD, and probably was super competitive in the NCAA playoffs. After all, he was named a D2 All-American during his career.

The Vikings, still waiting for a chance to play in their home pool--Atwell said permission could come before LJ's game Mon., Oct. 23 against Scripps Ranch--experienced a little bit of a letdown after last Thursday's 12-11 win over Bishop's.

Still, they shellacked Coronado, with Weston Bancroft leading the way, and goalie Vinny Vega deflecting shot after shot. The final was 10-4.

"We were playing better last week," was Atwell's comment. But he had plenty more to say, and he's obviously pleased with his team's positioning looking ahead to Bishop's and Cathedral Catholic (LJ lost 10-7) again before postseason.
