Viking distance runner Soren Larsen, 18, now a senior, ate a full breakfast consisting of three eggs scrambled, before La Jolla's cross country competition in the Bronco Roundup Invitational at Kit Carson Park, Escondido, Saturday morning, Sept. 8.
"With salt and pepper, yes," said his mom, as Larsen, the fourth-year participant in Coach Mandy Benham's program, ran his second circuit on the two-mile course at Kit Carson.
Asked if he ate a relaxed breakfast before the big meet, she said, "Yes, he said the distance was only two miles, so it wasn't that bad." The Crawford Invitational two weeks ago, which Larsen missed while he took the SAT test, covered 5,000 meters, or 2.2 miles.
Soren ran the course at Kit Carson in 12:53.1, finishing 93rd. That was an improvement over his time in the Bronco Roundup as a junior last year, when he was electronically clocked in 13:03.0, good for 51st place.
He enjoys writing his first name with the slash through the "o", coming from his family's Danish heritage. Such famous figures as Soren Kierkegaard, an existential Christian writer, spelled their name the same way.
