La Jolla's stellar girls volleyball team downed rival Bishop's, the second-ranked squad in the county, 3-2, in the Big Gym Friday night, Sept. 14.
The result was announced by Gary Frank, the Vikings' football voice, during the third quarter of La Jolla's home game against Scripps Ranch, which the Vikings won.
The volleyball win, a non-league match, raises Coach Kelly Drobeck's team's record to 17-2 on the season. Prior to the contest, La Jolla was ranked third in the UT weekly poll, right behind the Lady Knights.
During the week, asked if the number-three ranking was validation of the strength of the volleyball team, Drobeck responded cautiously, "I guess so", with a smile emoji. Her pronouncements to media are brief, often consisting of a sentence or a word. This was no exception.
The loss to their crosstown rival was the first loss of the season for Bishop's after nine consecutive wins to begin the schedule. The Lady Knights have only lost five sets all season, out of a total of 30.
