Cole Raulston, Cole Atwell, and company are ranked 13th in the current CIF Power Rankings for boys water polo.
The La Jolla High team carries a 10-2 record, with 43.17 points awarded. CIF uses a method to determine the value of each win, in view of the strength of the opposition.
So, Torrey Pines, whom the Vikings beat 10-6 in the opener of the America's Finest City tournament Fri., Sept. 21, is ranked seven places higher, despite a losing record, 7-8.
Also rated above Coach Tom Atwell's squad are Valhalla, in second place, with an 11-3 record, and Westview, ranked 12th, with a 4-4 record. La Jolla has had some good tangles with the Wolverines in recent times.
The coach doesn't necessarily use rankings as a motivational device with his team. But he knows his squad needs to "keep on keeping on" in improving and solving some of the defenses opponents are going to continue to throw at the Vikings--especially in view of the fact Cole Atwell nets the majority of the team's goals from his position on the 1-2 (right side looking out from the goal) side.
Raulston, the team's All-CIF goalie, has also been playing effectively through single-game and tournament encounters leading up to league play.
