Junior forward Kate Hartford scored the winning goal with 8:45 elapsed in the first overtime as La Jolla's field hockey team defeated visiting Helix, 2-1, in a non-league matchup Thursday afternoon, Sept. 13.
"When I had the ball, I was thinking we needed good passing," said the 5'6" offensive player. "As I approached their goal, I noticed the goalie had room on her left. I went to the right and scored."
Coach Amanda Combs Warford's squad played tough defense, one of its trademarks, through two halves of play. But the Highlanders didn't given much ground either, sending the game into overtime.
The referees immediately called a 10-minute overtime after a short break. Overtime is "sudden victory" (sudden death), ending the moment either team scores. If the first overtime had ended with the two teams tied, a second 10-minute period would have ensued, followed by "one-v.-one" dribbling and shooting beginning on the 20-yard line, as JV coach Beth Flaherty explained to a reporter.
Said the celebratory Hartford after the game, "I knew when we had the ball (on the last possession) that we were going to score."
