La Jolla High's talented boys water polo team begins play in the prestigious 21st Annual Scott Roche Tournament, hosted by Menlo School in the Palo Alto area, Fri., Sept. 7, with a 2:50 p.m. match against St. Ignatius in the Atherton High School pool, the alternate site for the tourney.
Then, if they win, they play again at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of the Buchanan-Rocklin match.
If they lose, they have to play in the earlier evening match at 6:35 p.m. against the loser of the Valley Christian-Redwood match.
Play continues Sat., Sept. 8, in the second day of the tournament with two more matches for each team.
Viking coach Tom Atwell, with 18 years at the helm, has said that, in view of experiences in early scrimmages late this summer, his team will be playing more zone defense to utilize his roster more effectively. "That will mean a slower pace," he said, back in the familiar environs of Coggan Pool two weeks ago.
In the Roche tournament, named after a former Menlo athlete who also starred for Princeton, later dying prematurely in a car accident, La Jolla (1-0 on the season so far) has never won a championship. Menlo, the host school, has dominated their own tourney, winning in four of the last seven years, eight overall. Menlo has won the last two titles.
Said Atwell on what he knows about St. Ignatius, La Jolla's opening opponent: "Only that that's where Dan Fouts (former Charger quarterback) went to high school."
