Alexandria Young, a 5'7" sophomore, is firing out some heat-seeking missiles on her jump serves for the La Jolla High volleyball team this season.
Coach Kelly Drobeck's team, in a total reversal of last season's fortunes, is displaying strengths by different players in all sorts of facets of the game.
The back line of defense has grown more tenacious and assertive this year, with libero Alex Dinofia--the other "Alex"--crediting that as a strong reason the team stands at 22-4 and recently enjoyed a number-three ranking among all schools in San Diego County in a poll.
Another area has to be serving, where Young, a newcomer to the varsity, not only has an 88.6 percent success rate in 273 serve attempts. She also has nailed 36 aces, meaning the opposing team was unable to make a play on her serve.
The serve total places her second on the Vikings only to teammate Maya Gessner, with 370. Dinofia ranks third in attempts with 252.
Young's ace total puts her only behind Gessner, a junior, and the sophomore Dinofia in that statistic.
In addition to Young's serving effectiveness, she has recorded 117 digs through 72 sets played in La Jolla's 26 games. That places her defensively second only to Dinofia, with 182, and just ahead of the lefty Gessner, at 113.
Young also visibly contributes some of the intangibles, displaying a positive attitude and talking it up with teammates to encourage them during matches.
