La Jolla's water polo team led Cathedral Catholic, 2-1, early in the second quarter Sept. 26 after goals by sophomore Alex Brown and senior Cole Atwell.
The Vikings, meeting the highly-ranked Dons for the first time in Western League play, still only trailed 4-3 at halftime after two more goals by Atwell. Cathedral's Christopher Sturtevant scored a trio of powerful goals, despite the hosts' defensive efforts.
But then the roof kind of fell in on Coach Tom Atwell's team, quieting a large crowd of La Jolla High students at Coggan Pool, as Cathedral scored three unanswered goals in the third period, two by Matt Somers. In so doing, the Dons went up 7-3 and took over momentum in the match that carried through the final quarter to a 10-5 finale.
"We play them twice every season. We need to learn from the game," said Viking senior attacker Pablo Rayon, reflectively. Asked what his team might have learned from the 10-5 decision, the 5'8", 140-pounder replied, "Make better decisions. Take control of the game."
The Vikings come back with a non-league encounter Thurs., Sept. 27, at home against Canyon Crest Academy. According to one CCA player, several Ravens got sick after the America's Finest City Tournament at Coronado over the weekend, and are either recovering or will be out for the game at La Jolla.
