La Jolla field hockey coach Paula Conway said it had been a busy week with three games, a rare occurrence.

What she didn't mention was that her Viking team won all three games by shutout. This was the week of November 3-7.

The offense sometimes sputters before starting, but it has performed well this year. The defense has been pretty dependable from the beginning.

La Jolla stands at 12-6. The highlight has been a 3-2 win over Cathedral Catholic two weeks ago. The Vikings scored in the opening minutes, were tied, then went down 2-1 to the charging Dons. But they recouped, knotted the score, and finally, in the closing minutes, netted the decisive goal.

The continuity of Conway being at the helm continuously has made a visible difference in La Jolla's play. Conway coached a handful of years ago, then left to work in the U.S. Olympic program at the Olympic Training Center (OTC) in Chula Vista. Her husband was also involved in the Olympic program.

In the interim, the fill-in coaches were dedicated and provided the girls a lot of good support.

But when Conway re-engaged full-time last season, the intensity was instantly felt.

Now the Vikings stand at the edge of the playoffs. "We'll find out the brackets Thursday night," Conway said at the Homecoming football game. She means Nov. 13.
