La Jolla forged a 24-7 lead over perennial CIF power Christian High late in the second quarter Nov. 21. But then the host Patriots had some offensive magic of their own, scoring two touchdowns in a minute and a half to close the gap, and went on to win 42-38 in a second round playoff match at Granite Hills High School in El Cajon.
The Vikings quickly sparked a 7-0 advantage on an 80-yard march on their first possession, with Jonathan Levenson carrying four times and quarterback Collin Rugg causing the Christian defense to jump offsides twice for penalties.
Midway through the second quarter, after a 22-yard field goal by Trenton Fudge, La Jolla scored again when linebacker Anthony Stanley picked off a David Jeremiah pass tipped by Daniel McColl and lumbered in from 24 yards out to post a 17-7 lead with 5:12 left in the half.

Running back Reid Martin was the beast of burden on the Vikings' next drive, with five carries and the scoring plunge from two yards for the 24-7 edge.
Christian featured mini-back Adrian Petty, a tiny speedster who ran up, around, and through the La Jolla defense. The Patriots took their first lead in the game, 28-24, with 8:06 left in the third quarter, and held on to win to advance to the Division III semifinals the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 28.
