Maddie Quach, 105 pounds, was down 2-1 early in a match at the Marauder Invitational at Mira Mesa High Sat., Dec. 9. She came back to win, 8-5. One of her coaches, Harry Wilson, commented immediately after the bout.
What did Maddie do well?
One is, she stayed super mentally tough. That girl she wrestled is very good. They're both skilled. She was down early. She stayed tough early in the match and throughout the match. The other girl kind of tired, so Maddie was still mentally tough the entire match.
What are you guys (coaches) showing her that you're working on here? (demonstrating a shift of weight--to show her right after the match)
It's little things. The other girl was hanging on her head a lot, so they were controlling her head.
Does that wear her down?
Exhausting, and it can set up all their (the opponent's) moves, so they can snap from there, and tire you out and set up their takedowns.
So what you were teaching was taking her weight and swinging it around (behind the opponent)?
So that's a pass-by. Hanging on her head, we have three options: we can hit a pass-by, and that'll lead to me hanging on her neck, and then I can swing her down.
Or we can elbow off, which gives me an angle for her legs.
Or she can work an inside tie and get her off her head. If we let someone hang on her head for three periods, it's going to be exhausting.
Mentally, she's in a good place?
Mentally strong. I think that's what won her the match. She stayed in a match that she was losing, and she kept pushing, and chasing and chasing, and didn't fatigue mentally, while the other girl did. That's a big mental thing.
