LJ b soccer: Q&A with coach Pilar Flores

By Ed Piper

Pilar Flores is beginning his second year as head coach of the La Jolla High boys varsity soccer team.

These remarks were made before the Vikings' 1-0 win over West Hills Fri., Dec. 1 in the Parker Cup Tournament at La Jolla Country Day School.

Pilar, what are some strengths so far?

They really kind of gel as one unit. There are no individuals. Everyone seems to focus on one goal. Our last game we lost 1-0, and I feel like last year we had the tendency to put our heads down and after one goal we couldn't come back. Now we're like a second-half team, or it's a team where when we're down, we're not going to give up.

What do you attribute the cohesiveness to? Are there seniors? Are there guys who have played together?

I think, just honestly, it's the seniors, and a couple of 10th-graders and 11th-graders kind of matured.
