LJ FB: Coach's view

By Ed Piper

"We had some opportunities in the first half, but we couldn't score," said La Jolla coach Tyler Roach. "In the fourth quarter, we were able to punch in two touchdowns."

Roach revealed, in the aftermath of the Vikings' 14-7 win at Mira Mesa Oct. 4 in week seven of the season, "We didn't simplify the offense. We simplified the game plan."

The benefits showed in no interceptions by sophomore quarterback Jackson Stratton. The young QB completed 13 of 19 passes for 115 yards. The right-hander threw a 16-yard TD strike to fellow sophomore Makai Smith for the first scoring of the fourth quarter, opening an 8-0 lead to build on a safety by linebacker Jack Wiese in the third quarter.

Regarding La Jolla's strong defense, which hasn't allowed more than 18 points in a game through six games, Roach said in a phone conversation Mon., Oct. 7, "That's what we talked about during the bye week. We know our defense is going to play well. We realize with the offense there is going to be a learning curve."

The formula worked in a workman-like, unspectacular third victory of the season, the first in Eastern League play. La Jolla is 1-1, 3-3 overall going into Homecoming Week against Morse Friday night, Oct. 11.

"Historically, during the time I've been a coach here, La Jolla has played well at Homecoming," said the third-year head coach who served as Offensive Coordinator from 2013 to 2015. "We talk about focusing on the game amidst all the activities of the week."
