LJ FB: #3 in Division 3

By Ed Piper

La Jolla High's football team is ranked third in Division 3 by the MaxPreps algorithm, which is a secret formula that no one else knows.

Coach Tyler Roach's 4-4 team, in a check this morning (Oct. 21), carries a 14.7 rating, helped by a 13.8 Strength of Schedule, one of the harder slate of opponents, according to the high school sports website.

The Vikings only sit behind Scripps Ranch, who La Jolla lost to earlier in the season, with a 25.3 rating, and Mater Dei Catholic, at 15.2. In other words, the Scripps Ranch Falcons are way out ahead of any other program in the ranking.

University City, this Friday's (Oct. 25) opponent for La Jolla, lies way down the rankings at number 15, with a 1-7 won-lost record. The Centurions pull up with a -14.1 calculation.

This year the coaches voted to use CIF's formula, rather than the one offered by MaxPreps, to determine playoff placement. Neither listing is without its drawbacks; neither one is perfect.
