LJ Cheer: Competition

By Ed Piper

La Jolla's cheer squad, under fourth-year coach Cindee Russell, will repeat its launch into competitive cheer again this winter, starting with an event January 6--right after the winter break.

Cheer team captain is senior Julia Munson. Co-captains are juniors Hailey Ramos and Sydney Ochoa.

Ramos, ninth-grader Jojo Clark, and other Viking cheerleaders attended the La Jolla football team banquet Dec. 3.

"We're going to have the same squad that did cheer in the fall for football games," said Russell, who, as a wife, mother, and cheer advisor, also continues to pursue her undergraduate studies in college. That's a full load that led to her having to take time off last year for a medical issue.

"It's also going to be the same squad for basketball games," the hard-working, likeable Russell said. Her daughter is a frequent presence at Mom's events. Cindee, herself, was a cheerleader in the Bakersfield area, but didn't recognize the name of the small community of Keene, where the sportswriter's cousins lived.

The Vikings' schedule looks like this:

Jan. 6 - Competition
Jan. 13 - Showcase
Jan. 20 - Competition
Feb. 3 - Showcase
Feb. 23 and 24 - Competition

One of those is an annual event at Patrick Henry High. The competitions are under the nationally-recognized competitive cheer organization.

Filling out the varsity cheer squad are juniors Angelique Pacleb, Neanna Stephenson, and Caitlynn Wisco. Sophomores include Skye Bentley, Camilia Gonzalez, Dylan Lyke, and Layla O'Laughlin. Freshmen are Arielle Bark, Camryn Kennedy, Olivia Lakin, Emily Talerman, and Kaitlin Wiltse.
