The title for this piece ("James") was selected to throw everyone off the scent.

"Diego" in Spanish can be rendered "James". "James", interestingly, can also be "Santiago". "Tiago" is not an unpopular name, including in Brazil. There are some prominent ballers with that moniker these days, including NBA player Tiago Splitter.

But, to our main subject, Diego Solis, he of the Class of 2021 at La Jolla High, says he's enjoying getting his feet wet on the varsity basketball team, here in the first couple of days of the preleague season.

December is tournament month for high school basketball players, and Solis, whose older brother Gabe is also newly on the team, is getting some minutes.

"I played half the game tonight," reported Diego on La Jolla's game against Helix in the Hilltop Invitational Sat., Dec. 2.

On what he's specifically enjoying so far, the lefty guard said, "I enjoy the competition and playing with my brother. I am working on being more aggressive. I love learning the game and playing basketball for my school."

On physical, athletic Helix, which beat La Jolla comfortably, Diego said, "They just played with more energy than us."
