LJ FH: Maya Hildebrand

"Morgan Hansen is doing an amazing job stepping up on both offense and defense," said Maya Hildebrand, a captain for the La Jolla High field hockey team, of the freshman, one of four freshmen on the team.

A fullback on defense, Hildebrand observed, "We have a very young team this year and a new coach (Lisa Griffiths), so things have been a little bumpy, but we're adjusting quickly."

Her honesty is refreshing in an era when athletes are coached to accentuate the positive with media. Evaluating the Vikings' opening 2-1 loss at Valley Center Sept. 2, the senior gave the good, bad, and the ugly. "I think defense did a really good job of playing well under pressure," Hildebrand commented. "The ball was on our side for the majority of the first half, and we managed to keep them shut out.

"The second half, we lost momentum and the offense was having a hard time keeping possession, so there were a lot of turnovers."

With classes starting Tues., Sept. 8, following the long Labor Day holiday weekend, La Jolla travels next to Westview Wed., Sept. 9.

Newly one of three captains for Griffiths, with Karla Quevedo and Trish Turner, Hansen now has to juggle leadership responsibilities with the demands of playing her fullback position. "I think right now I've just been concentrating on making sure that the team is a cohesive unit on the field, because we're all still adjusting playing with so many new faces," quoth she. "We lost a lot of seniors."

On the academic side, the recent birthday girl (August 25) will be tackling plenty in her senior year: AP Economics, Honors Chemistry, Math 150 (through Mesa College), ASB, AP Literature, and AP Art History.

She's Vice President in ASB. What does that entail? "VP is fun. I basically just help plan student-run activities like the dances, pep rally, and other spirit activities."

She is looking at Cal, UCLA, and Pomona College as her top schools right now for college next year.

She would like to pursue a major in cognitive science or political science. "Both my parents are academics," she said, "so I knew I wanted to major in some sort of science. I like that cognitive science blends social science with physical science."
