LJ FB: Bishop's preview

Casey Brown, who passed for five touchdowns and ran for a sixth in his debut as starting quarterback for La Jolla in a 52-42 season-opening football win at Country Day Aug. 28, assesses the challenge of facing CIF Division 4 defending champion Bishop's Fri., Sept. 4.

"I think if we play well and execute our jobs, we can beat them," said the senior quarterback, who went 23 for 41 in passing for 290 yards in his debut. "With them only having 18 or so players, we can just use our up-tempo offense and make them tired."

This has been said before for Coach Jason Carter's offense. But the no-huddle spread offense the Vikings employ also means their opponents get the ball back each time La Jolla scores. Last year Bishop's, featuring All-CIF running back Bulla Graft, and with several players playing both ways, blitzed LJHS 42-7.

Fortunately, Graft has graduated, but the Knights return several starters from last year's title team.

The Vikings employed six starters on both the offensive and defensive platoons against Country Day: Daniel McColl, offensive line and linebacker; Alex Dockery, slotback and linebacker; Jonathan Levenson, running back and defensive back; Joseph Duran, running back and defensive back; Alex Lopez, offensive and defensive lineman; and Dane Hansen, center and linebacker. "Too many," said assistant coach John McColl, Daniel's father.

Bishop's destroyed a team from Tijuana, Instituto Mexico, which obviously doesn't have an established team, 68-0. Some of the schools from Tijuana, where American football (as opposed to futbol soccer) is played by a small number of youth. When this reporter lived in and subsequently visited Mexico City decades ago, some households received the cable television feed of U.S. channels broadcasting NFL football.

Interestingly, both Graft and former record-setting Viking quarterback Collin Rugg are practicing alongside each other on full-ride scholarships at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri.
