Ashley Brazell, a junior, has played a major role in La Jolla's success so far this season.
Brazell, from her position as an outside midfielder, was named Player of the Game in a Viking win over rival Canyon Crest Academy in overtime.
La Jolla coach Amanda Combs Warford says she makes a lot of good decisions in the heat of the game.
Ashley, 16, has plans to continue playing field hockey in college, maybe at the Division 3 level.
Regarding teammates, Brazell notes forward Haley Mossmer's leap forward this season to being a leading force on the offense.
"Her overall improvement from last year to this year is amazing," the midfielder said before a recent game.
"(Haley) hasn't played that much," Brazell added. In other words, such development in relatively limited game experience is impressive.
She had a similar observation about Viking goalie Claire Telford: "She was JV B goalie as a freshman. She had never played until then." That was two years ago.
Regarding academics, Ashley said, "No one sleeps in Mr. (Jerry) Teller's History class. We just finished the American Revolution, how we broke away (from England). One important figure we studied was (Casimir) Pulaski, the American cavalry guy. He helped the revolutionary effort."
Pulaski, who has a fort in the southern U.S. named in his honor this reporter visited a year ago, was a Polish nobleman considered "the father of the American cavalry".
