Before La Jolla's upset of Santa Fe Christian in week three of the season, Eagles coach Jon Wallace talked about his powerful running back, Stephen Britton.
"He's a good back. Hopefully, he has a breakout game," the veteran coach said a short time before the kickoff of the La Jolla-Santa Fe Christian game at Edwards Stadium.
As it turned out, the Vikings' stout defense was able to wear Britton and the rest of the Eagles down over the course of the game, and ended up taking away a convincing 28-14 win.
Britton, a junior, had a productive game. But in the latter stages, it was apparent, from the hard-hitting that Coach Tyler Roach's defense was applying--Max Smith, Jack Wiese, et al--that Britton and others were tired mentally as well as physically.
The Eagles running back finished with 82 yards on 12 carries.
It was a testament to Defensive Coordinator Charles Bussey's unit. What a first half of the season they have had.
The defense alone has kept the Vikings in basically all of their five games so far, even though the team record stands at 2-3.
Their most recent loss, to Scripps Ranch away from home, was only 17-7. The season opener, a loss to a powerful Bishop's squad that is blowing other teams out, was only 18-9.
Britton has piled up 684 yards rushing in his team's first five games that statistics are available for. Wallace's team is 4-2 overall.
