As players stretched on the field as part of their warm-up before the season opener against Bishop's, Viking linebackers Jack Wiese and Max Smith were pretty accommodating to a reporter's last-minute questions, even though he butted into their pregame routine.
Q: What are you going to concentrate on during the game?
Jack Wiese: Stopping the run. Get over the passes. That's the most important thing--stopping any run.
Q (as Wiese continued co-leading stretching on the turf): How important is communication?
JW: The most important thing.
Q: How was the week of practice?
JW: Super-energetic, focused. Everyone is super-excited about this game.

Q: What do you want your teammates focused on?
Max Smith (a short distance from his teammate Wiese, also leading warm-ups): Just doing our job. We know they have a good quarterback (Ty Buchner).
We have a good defense, so everyone just needs to focus on their job and work together.

La Jolla, though losing, limited Buchner, a Notre Dame commit, and the highly-touted Knights offense to two touchdowns in an 18-7 result. The Vikings were even midway through the third quarter.
Look at the results of succeeding Bishop's games this season. Coach Joel Allen's team has piled up 50 points against more than one opponent. La Jolla, as Coach Tyler Roach pointed out, kept itself in the game and had a chance to win in the late going.
In week two, Bishop's overwhelmed University City, 58-12.
The next week, Buchner and Co. massacred Mater Dei Catholic, another private school that can offer scholarships, 71-42.
The result in week four was Bishop's 57, Rosamond, wherever that is, 0.
The most recent scoreboard-light-popper: the Knights over Parker, 53-13.
Buchner, to this point, has thrown for 1,595 yards, with 19 touchdowns in the air.
He has also run for 572 yards, adding nine touchdowns on the ground.
That adds up to 28 touchdowns by one player.
