La Jolla's basketball team has a fun match-up coming up early in its 2019-20 schedule--an encounter with crosstown rival Country Day, which LJCDS Coach Ryan Meier says is young and rebuilding following the graduation of All-CIF guard Ryan Langford, who matriculated at Princeton University this fall.
"It's wide-open, all new," said Meier earlier this fall in discussing his upcoming Torreys team. "That's the good part of high school sports. I'm looking forward to it."
In the same vein, Vikings coach Paul Baranowski began molding his new squad during the summer league schedule, which included the annual trip to Tucson, where he won an Arizona small schools state title and where the coach maintains many of the relationships he established while living and coaching in the desert.
La Jolla, led by returning juniors Diego Solis and Christian Gamboa, and sophomore Max Raulston, played several games in the Grossmont summer tournament, which encompasses multiple weekends during the hot East County months.
That continuing connection means Baranowski and his program will again play host to games in the winter Grossmont Tournament with La Jolla High serving as an alternate site.
The plus is that the Vikings will play in the feature game each night for five nights, December 14, 16, 19, 20, and 21, at 7:30 p.m. on their home court.
