Rick Jackson, head football coach at Madison High, was encouraged to interview for the open Helix High head coaching position but decided not to, according to sources.
Jackson thought better of the opportunity, even though Helix has a rich football heritage and the job position is open. Jackson built up the Warhawk program, and besides his head coaching position serves as athletic director and teaches biology at the Clairemont school.
Through this past season, La Jolla has played Madison each year in the Western League. But that is a thing of the past: The Board of Managers of the CIF San Diego Section recently okayed the realignment of the City Conference leagues, including the Western League.
It was also said that former La Jolla High head coach Jason Carter, who resigned his position in January, asked for a running clock in La Jolla's eventual loss to Madison last season--before Madison had reached the usual 35-point-lead threshold for a running clock to be implemented.
Jackson turned the request down, because it was Madison's Homecoming game and he wanted as much of an opportunity as possible for his seniors to play in their final Homecoming game.
Madison went on to score the points that would reach the 35-point threshold, and the rest of the game was then played under a running clock.
After the game, according to the sources, Carter and his staff, instead of retiring to their end zone after the ceremonial post-game handshake, approached the Madison staff and criticized them for being "unsportsmanlike". A heated exchange between Carter and Jackson then took place.
