"We're getting better," Darice Carnaje, La Jolla girls basketball coach, said, partly a statement and partly a question in her voice, as she spotted a reporter after the Vikings' narrow 43-39 loss at University City Thurs., Feb. 11.
"I just arrived," he answered, so she didn't get any valid affirmation from the third party. She knows, though, from all her years of coaching that her Viking squad is getting better game-by-game.
La Jolla, on UC's Senior Night, started out by leading 10-8 after the first quarter, 19-14 at halftime. Forward Paulina Cardenas, a good outside shooter, had two three-pointers and a pair of free throws in the first quarter to key the Vikings' charge.
In the second period, play-making guard Rebecca Saul had the Vikings' only three, added a two, and saw Sina Anae and Satori Roberson score a pair of points each.
The Vikings fell behind in the third quarter, 30-27, being outscored in the period 16-8. The Wills sisters were active for UC. Morgan, only a freshman who singed the nets in their previous meeting, had two baskets and five free throws. Madison, a junior captain, hit two three's and three free throws.
Kate Kurtchi, who has never met a shot attempt she didn't like, sank two shots from beyond the arc as well as a two-point goal for La Jolla in the fourth quarter. She finished with 11 points. Roberson had 10.
The Vikings fell just short.
